Bio
Tom Tyler – a modern day one-man super band – injects fresh excitement into the UK rock/pop . Undoubtedly multi-talented (writing, vocals, multi-instrumentalist and production), Tom Tyler is rapidly garnering acclaim amongst musical and media circles. With a sound akin to a rock/pop fusion of The Police and Jack Johnson, ’Shooting Star’ is a musical expression of the strength of second-time-round love. The single is a taster of Tom’s debut solo album, ‘Silence’, which delivers some outstanding musical gems, exposing the wisdom and experiences of a man who has an extraordinarily life story to tell – a jigsaw life of global adventure and relationships. The title track, ‘Silence’, is an epic masterpiece, underpinning a sound-bed of dramatic classical strings upon which Tom’s incredible vocals dance – think a contemporary take on The Verve’s Urban Hymns. A much bolder, upbeat sound comes from the looping hooks of ‘Skyline’, (reminiscent of Don Henley at his finest) a vibrant story of life in New York, which explodes into full colour through the narrative of the video (produced and directed by Towa). This contrasts with the delicate Razorlight-esque intro of ‘Home’, which delivers a delicious mixture of rock/folk as Tom describes the peace found when your heart gets a home, or the smooth, catchy melody telling the tale of the end of a relationship in, ‘This Time’. Written between 2010 and 2011, Tom saw the album as a cleansing process, “I sat down and poured out my locked-up emotions as I wrote these songs. I wrote all the lyrics and music and played all instruments on the original tracks.” But by the time Tom hit the recording studio, he had a list of eager collaborators to help bring this work of art to life…. The album was produced by Cam Blackwood, who’s worked with Florence on her world tour, plus CSS, We Are Scientists, Viva Brother etc. Exec production on 3 tracks came from Nick Keynes and Mike Harwood from Goldust (Kylie, Marli Harwood) along with Jay Reynolds (Pixie Lott, Just Jack) mixing. Between Cam’s indie rock sensibilities, and Tom’s unashamedly commercially-eared approach, they created a sound that has performance and genuine musical integrity at its foundation. Although Tom was originally playing all the parts, some other collaborators came onboard and offered their services. Matt Ratcher played the drums (Prodigy, Kylie), Arny from The Vaccines on bass, Ben Mark (Take That, Westlife, Good Cop) played some extra guitars and Dave Klinke (Saint Savior, Judie Tzuke) also contributed. The incredible sound of ‘Silence’ is the musical culmination of a lifetime of exciting adventures experienced by a man who began his musical journey at the tender age of 3. Tom’s talent grew from such a young age through the guitar, violin, drums and piano, as well as enjoying vocal performances at stage school and a stint with his brothers in their first band, Riverstate. Alongside his musical adventures, Tom’s life took him on unbelievable global journeys from the UK to Thailand, where Tom spent a year teaching English to local boys at an English seminary and was bestowed with the gift of the Thai language in return, through to Australia and the States – each destination with a vibrant story to tell. These adventures link hand-in-hand with a string of heart-break and failed relationships, which have left this artist scarred and tales to tell. A patchwork of mind-expanding escapades and relationships, which fuse together and richly weave their wisdom into the sound and lyrics of ‘Silence’. Tom Tyler is a man of outstanding talent with an unstoppable drive and ambition to bring his music alive, no matter what the sacrifice – time, relationships, money and career have all taken a back seat. But the sacrifices have been worthwhile, as audiences will experience when the first taste of Tom Tyler is unleashed in the form of his debut single, ‘Shooting Star’. Enjoy the journey!

Q. How did you first get into playing music?
My mum gave me Violin when I was 3 years old. I couldn't play much but I loved it anyway.
Q. How long have you been performing?
Well I guess since I was about 7 years old. I started playing the drums and that meant I was performing pretty quickly.
Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
Layers of music and lyrics that tell a great story on top of an even better melody.
Q. What makes your music unique?
I think that it's is an absolute expression of my emotions. I am not very good at expressing myself, but with music I find it easy. And so what you get is a story of me and my life in words and music.
Q. What inspires you to write songs?
My own experiences and that of others, and the desire to communicate these emotions to others and have them connect with the music in their own way.
Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?
Ha great question. I once played a gig in central London literally to the bar maid. That was not a great night. And one of the best was a Christmas gig I did last year when loads of BBC Radio 2 producers turned up.
Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?
Practically impossible, can I say my own, probably not... So answer but I think it would have to be Grace - Jeff Buckley - It reminds me of a very special time in my life.
Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?
Think about making more music. And I have 6 nieces and nephews who keep me busy
Q. What are your goals at the moment?
I am just writing a new EP, which I want to be better than my last album, and I would like it to really connect with people, write a soundtrack for peoples lives. So not too much . ;-)
Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?
Well, I'm always gigging, mostly just acoustic sets, where I can be flexible and throw different songs and covers into the set. And yes i am writing some new material in London and then in Stockholm with some great writers. I;m very excited about that.
Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?
I love it. It gives a voice to those of who need it most.
Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?
Well that would be Hanging Doors, and it's about how we can put up roadblocks in our own hearts to something which we are scared of. It's amazing how we can block certain emotions out, and never go there. But as with most of lyrics, i pose the questions and then set up a answer of sorts in the chorus.
Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?
Well it was pretty good actually. I grew up mostly near Stratford-upon-Avon so it was music and theatre all mixed in. But there was quite a lot of rock and metal which I loved at the time, and still do actually.
