Introduction

Instinctive, urgent and raw Alternative Pop

Bio

Championing their own breed of Alternative Pop, BATTLE OF YOU stand between the light and dark of love, loss and pop music. With a striking and urgent live performance, BATTLE OF YOU have been compared to artists such as Gossip, Bowie and The Cure for their strong androgynous image and raw, instinctive sound. Alongside the provocative and the alternative, BATTLE OF YOU’s songs also scream with pop sensibilities and instantly like-able pop hooks, placing them alongside bands such as Passion Pit, MGMT and Coldplay. An explosive 2012 saw them catapulted onto the airwaves of BBC Radio 6 (Tom Robinson - BBC Introducing) and Absolute Radio (Pete Donaldson - Sunday Night Music Club) and being handpicked by Emerging Icons (Universal) to perform at the London 2012 Games as one of their ‘Best Acts of 2012’. Alongside playing to the crowds of the Paralympic Games, BATTLE OF YOU also captured the attention of notable media including the BBC News who featured their performance at the Paralympics and songs ‘To The Sea’ and ‘Nobody Knows’ on the 6 O’clock news. BATTLE OF YOU spent the rest of 2012 spreading their battles to the audiences of 02 Islington Academy2, Scala and 100 Club and the dance-floors of Bad Sex(Proud), Queen of Hoxton and a sell out show at Candy Bar. 2013 finds BATTLE OF YOU surfacing from the studio with their self titled DEBUT EP in hand. Produced by Coen Dingemans & Gary Wallis (Pink Floyd, Mike & The Mechanics, Girls Aloud) available on all digital platforms and physical, the EP bursts with the bold, bright and honest cries of a heart searching for forgiveness. This 6 track debut is a full on and intense introduction to a band making serious waves. Their floor filling and heart beating DEBUT SINGLE ‘Rebecca’ sees the band explore the trickery and illusion of love and betrayal through the eyes of the perpetrator and wails and rides with the indie pop guitars, synths and bold vocals the band are loved for. With a music video to follow from Plenty.tv (MTV, SONY) and a summer full of shows including Beach Break Live 2013, BATTLE OF YOU have high hopes for the future and where their battles will take them next.

"To The Sea" LIVE at Paralympic Games 2012

Q. How did you first get into playing music?

Myself and Nic met in the first week of Uni @ Westminster, we totally hated each other and did our best not to be put in the same groups or have to see each other. Then after a few months, we put aside our differences and started to make music together ( I invited her over to write some songs)and it all went from there. We realised that we had something pretty awesome when we worked together, and then became best friends. It's kinda awesome, its like the opposite way to how most people form bands. And its given us so much inspiration . We found our other band mates on Gumtree. Our drummer Hernan moved from Argentina, thousands of miles, just to be in a band. He wanted to be in London because its so important for music, and knowing how far he'd go to follow music made us all connect. That's where the name came from, because we've all battled so much to even be in this band. But it's worth it.

Q. How long have you been performing?

Just over a year. We've all been playing since we were tiny, but we all met over the last couple of years in London.

Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

Instinctive, urgent and raw Alternative Pop.

Q. What makes your music unique?

We all have such wide influences, and don't shy away from pop music. We love epic choruses and catchy hooks as much as more ambient, alternative indie. So we hope that creates a unique sound for the band.

Q. What inspires you to write songs?

Nic : I find the battles, I always write the best songs out of battles it's like a form of release. Mel : I guess love, for me that's probably the biggest battle, and I think it's one that everyone has...and David Bowie. Hernan : Dreams

Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?

Best gig was probably at Bad Sex at Proud Camden. Such an awesome crowd, and it was just after we got our first airplay on BBC Introducing so it was a huge party, with people covered in jelly in swimming pools. Worst gig was probably when I got the giggles on stage because we opened the set with the worst sounding note ever, and I didn't stop laughing for 35 minutes. Literally couldn't sing a word and everyone was just staring at me waiting for me to stop. Horrendous.

Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?

Mel : Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Nic : Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto although Spice Girls Greatest Hits is a massive contender Hernan : Battle of You’s first EP..when its out.

Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?

Mel : Baking and listening to really sad songs. Nic : I buy granny clothes from charity shops and ebay and dress up on the weekends trying to get in to exclusive bingo nights. Hernan : Thinking about music

Q. What are your goals at the moment?

Our goal is to share our music with as many people as possible. We're about to go into the studio to make our debut EP and then we can show everyone what we've been working on. We're going to release it this year, and we have alot of surprises and awesome things to go alongside it. Then, take over the world and stuff.

Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?

Our next show is on the 28th July @ CAT LOVERS Queen of Hoxton. It's such a great night and we're so excited to be playing it. After that it'll be mixing our record and getting it ready for release with our debut music video which is being made by Plenty, an amazing 3D animator from Buenos Aires. We're so excited for this summer and this year, we have so many things to show everyone.

Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?

We think it’s a great opportunity for all the great talent out there. It gives the artist that little boost they need providing a platform to bring their music to the world. It offers so much to the artist and the listener and that’s why we wanna be part of it.

Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?

Our most recent track 'Passenger' is about being in a relationship thats so volatile and feeling like you have no control. When you feel you're in the back seat and can't help if it crashes or doesn't. Our single 'Rebecca' is written about somebody I used to know Like Gotye ha! Just I didnt love them quite as much. And our song 'B.O.Y' is all about being yourself. The Battle of You.

Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?

Mel : I grew up in Southend, Essex. And it's always had an amazing and diverse music scene. Being by the sea yet so close to London leads to some really weird but awesome music. But nothing compares to playing in London Nic : I think I was kind of in a world of my own for a bit. Once my dad showed me how to use CakeWalk I would record me own songs and take them into school on my portable CD player and force my friends to listen to them. Hernan : I used watch a lot of MTV

  • An acoustic track that smashes down the walls and explodes in to an ace synth romp. Evokes memories of Motion City Soundtrack and the like. Love this!

  • For once, the musical description makes me look forward to listening to the tunes. AND it's accurate too. It makes me think of an energetic, right on, Indie band. They should be praised (and I will!) for a decent song, an ear for a dynamic arrangement, a synth sound that doesn't sound like a trendy modern add on. Minor downsides on this tune ... slight out of tuneness with the guitars on the intro and drum fills that don't quite make it. Overall though, I approve and am now checking the other tune. The singer sounds like she may be a Star in the making.

Buzz

  • Dynamic arrangement with fantastic vocals. Both the music and the vocals are vibrant and loud, but in no way one steals from the other.

  • I lurve this song, not only because I'm obsessed with the sea (and it now reminds me of Brighton), but because it is a proper cheery, feel good, happy summer tune - I defy anyone to listen to it without smiling! (Especially after Mel's laugh at the end). The guitar riff also reminds me a little bit of a Razorlight song.. sorry if that is not a cool thing to say (I am old and out of touch!)

  • Look at me!!!

  • YEAH BUDDY! Tune.
