Bio

Having been chosen to perform at the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics on the Emerging Icon's stage, along with supporting Ellie Goulding back in 2009, as well as airplay on radio stations such as BBC 1Xtra, BBC 6 radio & BBC Introducing, Alice Amelia is set for an exciting future in the music industry. Her eclectic songwriting stretches right across the musical spectrum. Examples include top-line writing for dubstep, pop and dance music, with 2 of her dubstep tracks (produced by up and coming producer Cruso), being made Record Of The Week on BBC 1xtra & Amazing Radio. Although Alice will continue collaborating with various producers, her defining sound is found through her own compositions. Her songwriting leans towards a soul/R&B/jazz vibe creating skin-tingling, unique ear-catching sounds with both her voice and the piano. With songs such as 'Funny Little Creature' and 'We Are All The Same', there's something about her songwriting that seems to connect with people on a deeper level, both on a conscious and unconscious level. As she states, "I'm naturally an intense person, so when it comes to sitting at the piano, I become like 10 times more intense, meaning I don't like to just write cliche, generic lyrics that most 'popular' music tends to use like 'fly-by-night' love or getting drunk in a club. Instead, my songs are based on an expression of human truth and awareness, which I really feel is important to talk about; especially in the type of world we live today where the truth is so unbelievably censored. Q. How did you first get into playing music?

I was classically trained on the violin and piano from the age of 6. My dad is a violinist for the Royal Opera House and also a pianist and composer, so I naturally was inspired to play music from watching him as I grew up. Plus my mum would blast anything and everything from Patsy Cline to UB40 to T-Rex, all day, everyday, so it was inevitable I was doing to get into music somehow!

Q. How long have you been performing?

I have been performing publicly since I was 15.

Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

A mish-mash of genres, from dubstep to soul, united by one expressive voice.

Q. What makes your music unique?

I guess the fact I rarely stick to one particular genre? Although a lot of industry professionals might frown upon this, floating around different areas of music is something that has always naturally happened with me. I’m an emotional wee thing and different genres offer different outlets for the emotion/message I’m trying to portray. This has meant I’ve managed to appeal to a range of people from dubstep listeners to those that prefer simple piano/vocal songs. I want to connect with everyone and not segregate myself into one musical corner.

Q. What inspires you to write songs?

Inspiration can pop out of anywhere – as an overly analytical person, people and situations can always spark a song idea. Like the other day, I was walking down the street and absolutely every single person looked bloody miserable, so I started writing about what they would do if I just ran over and started singing and dancing around them like a complete loon (obviously written in a more poet way!) On the other hand, I am interested in the “unknown” and alternative views, so these subjects can spark quite “controversial” type songs, but I keep it metaphorical.

Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?

My best gig was a very spontaneous gig! I was in Hong Kong and went into a bar where there were live musicians. My sister’s boyfriend knew the guys and got me up singing – I gave them the chords and they were brilliant! I was asked to sign autographs and sign people’s body parts which was pretty surreal. My worst gig was when I was playing on a really slippery floor and my sustain pedal kept sliding forward, so in each song I was basically doing the splits while trying to pull back the pedal and sing and play the piano at the same time – major cringeworthy performance.

Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?

India Arie, “Acoustic Soul”. She writes the most positive, uplifting music I've ever heard!

Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?

If I’m not making music, I’m usually designing posters for gigs, doing a bit of photography, going on random walks, being a social bunny in Brighton and eating – I love my food!

Q. What are your goals at the moment?

My main goal at the moment is getting new music written/recorded with a new producer that I have started working with and to try and get a manager to help me to the next level!

Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?

I have been working with dubstep producer Cruso, writing and singing the topline to what will be our 4th collaboration. As said before, I have also started working with a new producer on my new songs which will be released as an EP at the end of Summer 2012 called "Songs For Humanity".

Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?

UBR has opened doors to some amazing industry opportunities, giving me great support and promotion along the way. This is hands down the most valuable and rewarding online music platform for unsigned artists.

Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?

The last track I wrote is called "What Is It You're Waiting For". I guess this has quite a politically controversial message behind it. I wrote it after watching an interview with David Icke, basically summing up my thoughts on the things he spoke about to do with how the world is really run, asking what the aim of this growing 'mass control/manipulation' is REALLY for... Does it go beyond simply greed and a thirst for power? Is there something deeper behind it all? What is it going to lead up to? It sounds like a really serious song... but it's still got a soul/catchy vibe to it!

Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?

The music scene where I grew up in Hertfordshire had a really great mixture of all types of bands and artists. In saying that, male rock & indie bands were the most domineering, but from what it seems, that seems to be the case in most English towns! It did kind of work out for me being the odd one out though, as a female soul singer/songwriter tinkling away on her piano...

  • High tempo overtones with a solid beat and incredible soulful vocals. Alice Amelia creates a track that could be listened to in the morning to wake up to, in a club after a few drinks or driving a car at night.

  • I'm already a big fan of this track. It's expertly produced with some luscious and moody synths. There's a great vocal performance that has been cleverly placed in the sound. Alice seems totally dedicated to her art and there are subtle hooks that come at you after a few listens. It reminds me a little of "Timeless" by Goldie and I adore that track. Listen.

  • Proper piano playing with a Jazz tinge and soulful, emotive vocals. She reminds me a little of Alicia Keys. This track is like an unfinished painting - there's so much you could do with it - but none of it has been. Choice of backing musicians and Producer will be key decisions.

  • Undoubtedly Doubtful -- "Undoubtedly Doubtful" is a sweet little piano medley that could easily be the breakdown piece of a musical. The vocalist has a soaring, dramatic voice that conveys every heartfelt lyric powerfully to the listener. If you're a fan of musical theatre, this ballad track is the one for you.

  • Undoubtedly Doubtful. A piano swells and breaks behind a lone vocalist. Not a huge amount to this track, it's all a wee bit Tasmin Archer at times, and the key change doesn't help.
