Bio

Dorset girl Jazz Morley possesses a voice with such natural soulfulness beyond her years that it possibly comes as no surprise to learn that her first public performance was the first year infants’ nativity play! Fast forward to the present day and we find a rich, warm, emotive voice capable of the tiniest whisper of love to the full vent of a woman scorned. BBC Introducing support came in February 2011 when Jazz took part in the BBC Introducing Musicians’ Masterclass taking place at Abbey Road Studios. BBC3 invited Jazz to contribute to on-line content of the extraordinarily moving documentary ‘Our War’ marking the ten-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. Festival invites have also found their way to Jazz with Isle of Wight, Beach Break Live, The Great Escape, Greenbelt, Guilfest, Redfest, Bearded Theory and Wychwood all finding their way into Jazz’s diary. Music Week recognised this growing industry popularity by inviting Jazz to perform at ‘Breakout’ - their monthly showcase night for best new label signings and emerging talent. Summer 2012 saw Jazz invited to perform both the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – one of just a handful of independent artists to do so. A nationwide 44-date tour followed in support of her debut single ‘Stories’ produced by Kipper (Grammy and Emmy Award winner) and engineered by Cameron Craig (double Grammy and Brit Award winner) with an orchestrated arrangement of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ released as a Christmas single. Ever keen to play live, meet new audiences and carve out her career in the ‘old fashioned’ way by touring, Jazz heads out on the road again in Spring 2013 on her ‘Love Me Not’ tour. But despite this attention, Jazz eschews the beckoning bright city lights and fast cars. She’s a girl you’re more likely to find padding about bare foot on the beach, walking through puddles in wellies or driving Barry (her battered but beloved van) to the next gig. "Haunting vocals, oozing with the pain of heartache and beautifully humble production make Jazz’s records an enthralling listen. A storming live presence leaves no excuse to miss the experience of seeing her live." - Music Week “With references to Dusty via Duffy, this budding singer is well worth keeping an ear on” - BBC Introducing “(About ‘Stories’) “You can’t get more radio friendly than that particular tune" - Phil Jackson, BBC Introducing: The South "This is somebody who’s already got all her ducks in a row" - Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music "I'm going to leave you with a lovely track from Jazz Morley. It’s the début single from the Dorset singer and I think this is just great!" - Jim Gellatly, Amazing Radio “Stunning, understated and just pitch perfect… I feel like she is singing to me and at that moment nothing else matters.” - Polly James, Absolute Radio “She produces rich, powerful, emotive tunes that hush the atmosphere 'til everyone's too scared to breathe in case it breaks the spell.” - The Huffington Post "Haunting and soulful singer songwriter” - Time Out

Q. How did you first get into playing music?

I was pretty much born into it. Mum was a touring musician, Dad an actor - I didn't have a choice really!!

Q. How long have you been performing?

I had my public solo singing debut when I was 4 singing 'Away In A Manger' at Christchurch Priory on the end of a pew... does that count?!

Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

Joss Stone on a comedown.

Q. What makes your music unique?

My honesty. Needless to say some of my songs have got me into trouble...!

Q. What inspires you to write songs?

Things that happen to me. Mainly failed relationships and unrequited love!

Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?

Best: being asked by Alfie Boe to learn a song in half an hour and then performing it on stage with him in front of 4,000 people! Worst: probably almost fainting on stage and having to cut my set short!

Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?

Cor, that's a tricky one. Probably The Best of Fleetwood Mac. It's got something for every mood.

Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?

Performing my music! And driving to the next gig in my old battered van Barry.

Q. What are your goals at the moment?

To keep writing and performing and making lots of new friends along the way :)

Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?

Yup- a new single and video to be released in September and a 40 date UK tour to go with it!

Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?

Love it! Already received some very kind reviews and exciting performance opportunities as a result of being here – thank you UBR!

Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?

It's called 'Don't Ask Me Why' and it's basically me describing how I will never have a successful relationship. Which is probably for the best to be honest - I can't write songs when I'm happy!

Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?

Bournemouth... pretty diverse... a reasonable number of indie bands, a bit of folk, and LOTS of covers bands!

  • Jazz Morley's voice, on this track anyway, makes you feel like she's just singing to you. A grasp of dynamics and utter conviction in what you're singing help. But Jazz knows it takes more than that. It's something you can't describe or explain. Or indeed turn on at will - it just happens. And sometimes it happens to many people at the same time, in concert. I for one would like to find out if she can pull that off.
