A tonic.' Pete Donaldson

Q. How did you first get into playing music?

Got an Epiphone SG for christmas when I was 12, learnt Enter Sandman then put it down for 6 months, then Pearl Jam brought out Ten and I wanted to be Stone Gossard so started playing properly and haven't stopped

Q. How long have you been performing?

I had my first gig when I was 15, I could hardly stand my leg was shaking so bad. Been performing ever since, so 19 years!! Oh god I'm old.

Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

"Downbeat but gloriously wonderful acoustic rock with a cinematic edge, The Moth Lantern are a beguiling proposition." - Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 2

Q. What makes your music unique?

I think as well as having a really good sounding band, we also have a lot of good songs, I think it's pretty unique to find a band that delivers on both these days.

Q. What inspires you to write songs?

My beautiful wife and kids, life, death, dogs, space, monkeys and cake

Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?

I've had some great gigs at the Rescue Rooms and The Troubadour, really great crowds all digging it, what a feeling! We will be playing at the Olympics in two weeks, the band is sounding awesome and we can't wait. The lowest point has to be playing to no one in some dive of a London pub when promised labels and industry would be there while my car is getting broken into and I got a congestion fine, the joys of the music business!

Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?

The Moth Lantern's debut album released next year :)

Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?

I teach guitar for a living, then the rest of my time is spent with my family and friends

Q. What are your goals at the moment?

To get as many people to hear our band as possible, I have complete belief that given the chance The Moth Lantern could be a major signed band

Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?

Our second single 'Armour' is due to be released on 1st August, check the video atwww.youtube.com/watch?v=k_njWvPuGN8. We've been working on a full band setup for gigs and have a big gig in our home town Lincoln on 3rd August, oh and did I mention we're playing the funking Olympics!!!!!!!!

Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?

It's an excellent resource for us unsigned bands, thanks!

Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?

The Nightmare Is Just The Beginning - it's about how you have to go through bad times to really appreciate the good

Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?

I grew up in a small market town called Retford, so there wasn't much, but there was still a bit of a grunge scene that I was part of

  • A slow, soothing track from The Moth Lantern. I can imagine a Moth Lantern show being one of reverence, with the audience enraptured by the understated vocals and acoustic melodies, as this is certainly how I felt when listening to it. This chilled track feels right at home among the current folksy-acoustic scene and you can tell this band would get bigger and bigger if just more people heard their music!

  • So sweet on this track it ain't even funny. A terrifically understated voice, a track that could easily have been written by Alligator-era The National. A tonic.

  • Paul Simon in "Boxer" style starts off on guitar. It's all very dry and folky and, I'll be honest, not really to my taste. The lead voice has an appeal and is hinting at something original - but it's not there yet. Overall, it all sounds a little uncomitted somehow.

  • Second Moth lantern track of the day for me ... It's an improvement over "Comfort" - so they chose the right track for their single ! For me it's a shame they kept to the same four chords throughout the song.. There's a slow build from the middle of the track and I like the lead vocals in the higher, shoutier register. But overall, I'm left with the impression that the repetition was more through lack of ideas rather than a concious decision to use it for artistic effect.
