Introduction

Having recently performed at both the Olympics and Paralympics in London and often played on many of the major UK radio stations, Erin K is quickly making a name for herself in the UK folk/antifolk scene. Quirky, heartfelt and honest music with a touch of the bizarre.

Bio

Erin K is Erin Kleh and just a few years ago she picked up a guitar and began writing autobiographical songs that earned her a reputation in the London anti-folk scene. Originally from Texas, but has lived in London for 18 years, Erin K performs a range of quirky, honest and heartfelt songs. She has developed her own style of folk. For the past 2 years, she has been performing with bandmate Tash, but has now decided to peruse a solo career. As Erin K & Tash, she self-released their first single "Coins", which was picked as Huw Stephen' BBC Introducing Tip of the Week. She was the first unsigned act to be played on Nihal's Review Show on BBC1, and has had airplay on 6Music with Tom Robinson, BBC London, Absolute Radio and Kerrang. She now takes with her and continues to perform much of the music that made the duo so successful. She recently performed with her band inside the Olympic Park for both the Olympics and Paralympics. She is currently completing her first solo Album, which she hopes to release this winter. Sometimes funny, but never a comedy band, sometimes sad, but never melancholic. With harmonies that will send a shiver down your spine, lyrics that always hit a spot, tunes you'll be singing for weeks after and an incredible stage performance, this is a band that has to be experienced live at least once.

  • I like her sibilant and clear diction and the warmth of her voice. The arrangement sounds very organic and having a simple but evocative Cello line running through the song gives it a real sense of depth. I think Erin captures a very special mood with her music. On this song, though, I felt that maybe the melody could be a little less "staccato" and clipped in delivery. I think allowing the notes of the melody to hang on a little longer would give more value to the words, however, I think this is also a stylistic thing which also helps to establish a strong sense of uniqueness that identifies Erin.

  • The quirky folk hit from singer Erin K is a fresh and slightly cheeky take on the ever emerging folk music scene. The inventive and unclichéd lyrics and the fast paced tune to make it a good choice for number one in the Emerging Icons chart.

  • A definite laura Marling (Alas I Cannot Swim era) meets The Postal Service feel. Really dig the story telling delivery of the vocals. Also really like the video. Rarely do I manage to get to the end of a video but this one had me right until the end. This particular song doesn't have a particularly memorable chorus that sticks in your head. Thats my only negative. I suppose it's more about the general feel of the song. Am keen to hear some more stuff. Also intrigued to see how this translates into a live performance.

  • She's kind of got a bit of a Gregory and the Hawk vibe. For anyone who likes American singer songwriters definitely look up Coins. She's almost like a female Mike Skinner or Alex Turner in the way that she writes - I'd like to see her write some more observational stuff. Fingers crossed for big things for Erin K in 2013!

  • I've seen that she has had a few plays on 6Music and it's clear why. The arrangement is intelligent, but as good as this is, the real strength comes from the vocals. With well structured harmonies and well thought out lyrics Erin K has massive potential.

  • The pop and almost folky sound of this song I like, the track reminds me a little of Dido. The acoustic guitar complements her voice very nicely.

  • A rounded, warm, rich and relaxing acoustic sound. I thought Beautiful South and even the Corrs but with the integrity of Bon Iver. Mesmerizing vocals that pull you in for the full 4 minutes, complimenting each other perfectly throughout. It's fun, complex, yet very easy listening acoustic music. Interesting without being pretentious, relaxed without being forgotten. A tough balance that Erin K has got spot on. I'm a fan.

  • Such a pretty little song this, 80s folk-pop in 2012... or how about Suzanne Vega meets Kate Nash! Chilled, laid back, easy listening which will guarantee you raise a smile thourghout.

  • One of the stand out tracks on the Emerging Icons Chart. Erin’s vocals coupled with some simple harmonies make this song effortlessly beautiful. The airy guitar keeps the track light while the lyrics are commentating on the state of today’s society. The song is understated and seems reminiscent of early Kate Nash.

  • This sounds like a steady stream of consciousness. It makes me want to listen to it over and over again just to make sure I hear every word of this incredible story. It's a really original approach to a pop song. It's really interesting. There's not much of a chorus or hook but I'm digesting it now and thinking that's okay. It feels like she's just put pen to paper and kept writing and writing. I love it!

  • All relationships are transactional. But there is a special financial dimension to the relationship between father and daughter which Erin K & Tash explore in this deceptively light, but finely-sketched song."All his coins stacked in piles and all his folded shirts/They show that he's in control," they sing in sultry, bohemian tones that echo the Greenwich Village narratives of Suzanne Vega. Money can't buy you love but, as these girls know, it has its emotional uses.

  • Erin K immediately reminds me of a certain Suzanne Vega . The tone and the phrasing. Still, this is quality stuff performed with confidence and conviction. I'm not completely sure of the double time section. Cute vocal harmonies. It's dying for a Guy Sigsworth Production in my head !

  • Coins What a voice! First class production, even though the track's strength is that it's so stripped down. You'd half expect this to pop up in a teary teen coming-of-age flick, directed by Zac Braff. Superb stuff.

  • Listening to their track "Coins"... An underground Kate Nash sound with a vocal reminiscent of Suzanne Vega. A simple, chilled and beautiful song with contrasting complex storytelling. The simplicity is in the realms of The XX and equally I could see their record becoming a permanent coffee table favourite.

  • Coins - A rounded, warm, rich and relaxing acoustic sound. A tough balance that Erin K and Tash have got spot on. I'm a fan.

  • Coins - There are some beautifully descriptive lyrics in this song. I always have to admire great lyrics, as to me it's the thing that comes hardest as a songwriter. Coins starts with a bare acoustic guitar and vocal, and is intriguing at that point, but it's when the drums kick in that this song really takes off. The melody weaves in and out of the ticking groove, and soon some elegant close harmonies arrive, culminating with some wonderfully crafted counter vocals near the end of the song. I'm a sucker for some great vocal work in a song, and this track has it all.

  • This is OK. It has that familiar sound but so much of this kind of music hinges on the actual track as they are not breaking any barriers with a new kind of sound. The song writing really needs to be top notch in order for them to succeed. I think they are on the right track but not sure if they have that song that is going to break through yet.

  • It's rare that I hear something that makes go WTF!?!! But these guys definitely inspired that reaction in me, in a really good way. Telling personal, uncomplicated stories over pretty tunes in an understated and very cool manner. Talented song writers and beautiful tones/harmonies (especially in Coins on their myspace). Can I have an mp3 of coins please?

  • It's refreshing to hear an unconventional group line up - I think the last female duo that I can recall is T.A.T.U. ... oh dear. Luckily, that is where the similarity stops. Coins is a very nice summery track, with light vocals and sweet simplicity all round. At least that is what it sounds like. Listening more closely it soon becomes apparent that Erin K and Tash use quite unexpected time changes and cross melodies, similar to that of Maximo Park, that make for a very interesting listen. If you're a fan of easy listening yet well crafted music you'll enjoy this one. - Robert Dewis

  • Billed as anti-folk (I'm still yet to meet anyone who can explain what that means) I was skeptical they'd be any good, but I was blown away. The set was filled with well observed songs that at times had brilliant comedic value. I was left grinning from ear to ear. If you only check out one track, listen to Coins.

  • Coinsn -- Erin K and Tash put forth an offering of melancholic, soothing soft rock that despite its gentleness is hard to ignore. Their vocals suit each other perfectly and they combine an array of instruments with such a delicate touch that makes this song very appealing to the listener. - Anishka Sharma

  • The stand out feature for me in Coins is the vocals. I would love to hear Erin's vocal on a song with a more challenging melody, as the song for me doesn't do her voice justice! The clever lyrics here also shows me potential, so combine wit and the voice with a better melody and I think Erin K and Tash could be something special.

  • This Boy Built for a film soundtrack, this track is a jaunty little stroll through light acoustica - reminiscent of Jeffrey Lewis, or She and Him, if there were two Zooey Deschanels. And who wouldn't love two Zooeys?

  • It reminds me of early Suzanne Vega vibe wise with more of the wit that Kirsty McCall used to bring to things - there's definitely some decent humour to be had like with Jiggy Miggy. Was thinking 'Sorry I'm Not Black' was going to be tredding on dangerous ground but its pretty damn good and approached with the right spirit. I would definitely listen to this album and could see it easily in my collection. Really very good - I'll be keeping an eye on them for sure.

  • Jiggy Miggy - A song to make you smile, quirky, clever and fantastically cabaret.

  • LOVE their MySpace its really different and exciting. They look pretty and the songs are pretty. I need a bit more time to listen to their songs. They have some gigs coming up so that is useful to know. I really like them they are cool. Like their video. Good work. Keep doing what you are doing and let me know when you have some new songs I'd like to hear more.
