Bio

Chasing Owls are a British indie-folk band. Formed in Edinburgh in early 2010 the band consists of Ben Sunderland, Naomi Black, James Moir and Callum Bateman. Chasing Owls’ debut EP ‘We Began’ was recorded in the Sussex town of Lewes over the New Year of 2011. Released to general critical acclaim, ‘We Began’ enjoyed extensive press coverage at both a regional and national level with repeated airplay across BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6 Music complemented by coverage from The Scotsman, BBC Radio Scotland, Central FM and Absolute Radio. The band concentrated on a busy summer of festivals in 2011 including Belladrum, NME Weekender and Wickerman Festivals. This saw increased popularity throughout Scotland and helped encourage wider UK touring. Entitled ‘Quell’, Chasing Owls’ second record is a four-track EP and is due for general release in late May 2012, supported by an extensive UK tour and summer festival schedule.

  • This is indie-folk with plenty of pop potential. In fact you could think about selling it to Scouting For Girls. It's the most poppy of Chasing Owl track I've heard. I have to say I prefer the more folky tracks that marry the male and female vocals harmonies more. Looks like the band have worked hard to get good radio coverage, which is great to see as that's no easy task. Go check them out live if you're in their neck of the woods.

  • Flipping lovely... bunch of Scottish rockers having a bit fun and it comes beaming through in this track. Would I be shot to say this isn't too far from a Scouting for Girls record? Anyone else recon? *sorry* Bottom line though, seriously catchy vocals and even a 'whoop' half way through! That's always a winner...

  • They should lift up that girls singing in the background. It's not necessarily my personal taste but I love it - really good!

  • Deserves to be number one, a playful and joyous song.

  • Some of the best production you're gonna hear in an acoustic pop song this week. A fun track.

  • My third review of Chasing Owls... blimey I've almost moved in ! Chasing Owls just exude the swagger of a band who know what they want and know they are well on their way to achieving it. Hooks, Feel and Grit and a decent dose of character in the voices that should mean they rise above most others in this crowded genre.

  • This genial, new-folk-rock song raises more questions than answers. Who is the mysterious Lady of Whiteness who appears from nowhere and sends the band marching into the chorus with such a bouncy, highland spring in their step? This slightly spooky muse provides the inspiration for a kooky kind of song that combines a winning, New Radicals piano part with an essence-of-Guillemots melodic touch. Owls, Guillemots... the furry bird gets the earworm.

  • (Review for the track "You Breathe") Acoustic indie folk, absolutely gorgeous composition of vocals, blissful and hypnotic, leaves you singing the melody and wanting more.

  • Aaaah - a "less is more" arrangement - the sign of a band in control of themselves. Big Tick. Very classy and characterful voices too - I'm drawn in despite this not really being my fav genre. That has to be a sign of mainstream potential. Good build in the song and arrangement - this is easily my track of the week. Well done !

  • I think chasing owls would be quite difficult. Chasing Owls are not so difficult. It's quality AOR Folk. There are a few bands like this but you have to admire the technique and quality of the voices. This song is good too and I can even forgive the oh oh o o o oh hook the likes of which seem to span all modern genres of the moment. Worth checking out more.

  • Magic Land -- I am reminded of Del Amitri and more topically, Cherry Ghost. It's a great track.

  • Magic Land ---- Chasing Owls are back with a far more rugged and edgier sound than their previous offering, which distinctly separates than from the Mumford & Sons comparisons that I made. This is far darker, far more solemn and as a result far more meaningful. There is still the essence of a folksy twang but it is far more subtle, this makes way instead for more striking and intriguing instrumentation that captivates the listener as the song progresses.

  • Beautiful heartfelt vocal with soul enriching harmonies. A very well written and produced track that signals the coming of an incredibly strong act. Sits tightly alongside key 2010 names Mumford & Sons, Fyfe Dangerfield and Pete Lawrie. A spendid lullaby with a traditional folk feel.

  • Magic Land. Love this. Starts like every other bit of singer-songwriter mulch - but as we head into the 30 second mark, we're in for a hell of a scenic ride. Terrifically enjoyable.

  • A distinctive lead vocal - one which would continue to identify the band through years of radio play and performances. Beautifully blended harmonies in the chorus. The sound conjures images of summer, friendship and optimism.

  • Wedding Song A feel-good summertime track best enjoyed, one imagines sat on a hay-bale, soaking up every last millisecond of sun. life affirming stuff!
