Introduction

Girl, boy, synth, cello, guitars, beats

Bio

Gymnast are a Manchester-based duo who have been playing live since July 2012. Members Cathy Wilcock (lead vocals, guitar) and Chris Lyon (synth, cello, guitar, backing vocals) previously wrote and performed together as part of five-piece Edinburgh band Mayhew (Glastonbury ETC 2010 public vote winners), before that band went their separate ways in May 2011. After taking a few months off music – and despite being split between Edinburgh and Manchester – the pair began writing together again, now with the addition of electronic beats. On the back of a couple of demo recordings and with the help of a good old-fashioned public vote, they played their first gig on the Emerging Icons stage at the Olympic Park during London 2012. They are now both based in Manchester where they are writing and recording new songs and getting their teeth into the city’s famous live music scene.

  • The quirkiness of this track I found intriguing, it has a 'different' kind of sound about it that I really liked and at times reminds me a little of björk.

  • Gorgeous voice and lyrcis, in fact it's such a beautiful gentle track I think it could actually cure a Sunday morning hangover. Pretty sure these guys are from Manchester. Would love to check out their set up live, sounds very interesting.

  • Deep, sensual and a freaky sounding xylophone which adds to the haunting vibe. You definitely need to be in a creation type of mood to enjoy this music, but you can't deny it sounding utterly blissful given the right time of day..

  • "Away the sun" is a vague concept. Give it away? Throw it away? Get it away? Take it away? But it fits this brooding, minimalist musical sketch perfectly. Great atmosphere created by eerie keys, juddering beats and ethereal voice. Precious, in all senses.

  • Sirens - Tremendously enjoyable. A fragile yet driving experience in the company of two voices that fit together like some audio jigsaw.

  • Atmospheric and introverted piano boy /girl exploration vaguely reminiscent of Radiohead. For me, there's not quite enough going on before the 2nd chord sequence enters. Has promise though - I would check out some more tunes if I could find some !

Buzz

  • Perfect soundtrack for all those workers down at the dockyard (cool song)!
