Bio

Raphaella released her debut 5 track #IDIOT EP on the 1st of APRIL 2013 independently & it's receiving great reviews: "SBTV DJ Melody Kane "Listening to @raphaellamusic #Idiot EP and feeling the stress slowly leaving my body .. Check her out she's freakin Dope!!!!!" Mr Steve Anderson - MD for Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis, etc. "One of the best new voices around gets a fantastic song to illustrate the fact perfectly @raphaellamusic - IDIOT - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNnhkmspGbM … 'IDIOT' Launch Party at The Roundhouse, review: http://www.emergingicons.com/News/Article/316/emergingiconsinthespotlight-raphaellaattheroundhouse 'IDIOT' EP Reviews: Alt Sounds, Vanity Hype, Amaze Pop, etc." 'Above The Water' features on the London 2012 accredited 'Emerging Icons In The Park' Album Artist Daniel Powter review:"Amazing voice, Gosh she's got a beautiful voice... and that's not signed?!" Bio: "Picture this- an over excited, bright eyed- admittedly a little over zealous 4 year old little girl sits eagerly awaiting her first ever school report. As she excitedly tears open the envelope she asks her Mum to read out loud the box marked ‘music’, it reads, "Raphaella can sing in tune". As expected or perhaps unexpectedly she is disappointed, because to her- her love of music and singing even at this age coupled with her big brown eyes full of pre-school optimism feels like this matter of fact statement is so flat and impersonal that it may as well not have even been written at all. As it turns out, being able to sing ‘in tune’ as her teacher had put it- at this age was a feat few four year olds could achieve, and was actually quite rare (I know right, who knew?). So, fast-forward 18 years (yes that’s right... with all mental arithmetic done you should be at age 22), Raphaella- well… me... is still hopelessly in love with music, and if you were wondering- yes, also a definite- but definitely proud ‘geek’. So why don't you join me over a virtual Flat White or in fact a cup of Persian tea and find out a little bit more about me below :-) Well it is a bio after all, right? x" Be prepared to be taken on a roller coaster of emotions when listening to Raphaella, as her songwriting takes you on an education of the heart with the highs of flying and the lows of falling… in LOVE. On first glance you may think Raphaella is a typical girls’ girl with an overuse of ‘lol’ in her tweets, but look a little deeper and you’ll find this 22 year old Persian/Scottish/English girl from North London has a profound/in depth love for Rumi, Shakespeare, Hafez, Jane Austin, and the French Revolution with Raphaella joking, ‘When I make it onto Celebrity Mastermind, I will know I have made it! lol’ Raphaella's earliest memories of music were hearing Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Carmen, Mahler and more, being blasted out from her late Grandad's Stained Glass Artist studio in Dorset, who had a vast record collection of 78's and Vinyl’s, & being told that as a toddler she would hum along to 'Hello Dolly' and Sesame Street's ABC, in fact she's never stopped singing… ever. So it comes as no surprise that Raphaella is where she is now, forging her identity as a successful independent Artist and Songwriter & is currently writing for her Artist project with International multi-selling Platinum writers & producers: Curtis Richardson (Joss Stone, J-Lo, Rihanna, Craig David, Mariah Carey), Blair Mackichan (Will Young, Lily Allen, Paloma Faith, Trace Adkins), Phillipe-Marc Anquetil (Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Kelly Rowland, Little Mix), Hiten Bharadia (Jessie J, Lemar, Craig David, The Overtones, Lee Ryan, Lawson), Adam Argyle (Newton Faulkner, Ollie Murs, Josh Kumra, Matt Cardle), Neil Athale (Josh Kumra, Lawson, Paloma Faith, Matt Cardle), Dan Gautreau (Ben Howard, Alicia Keys, Kylie), Ben Harrison (Rihanna, Emeli Sande, Tinie Tempah) Since graduating from University (Goldsmiths & The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance) in 2011 with a 1st class honours degree in Music & formerly classically trained in piano & violin, Raphaella hasn’t stopped creating music. Signing a Publishing deal in April 2012 with respected UK independent Phrased Differently she’s unsurprisingly been in great demand as a songwriter with collaborations with Afrojack, Ishi, etc and many international cuts including a certified Gold record for Ivy Quainoo ‘The Voice’ winner of Germany, ‘The Voice’ winners of Holland, Korea and Bulgaria, K-Pop giants SHINee, Dionne Bromfield, Nabiha, etc. Raphaella’s artist career to date has seen her join line-ups with Texas, Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, The Rizzle Kicks, Clement Marfo And The Front Line, Lianne La Havas, etc. Highlights she says of 2012 were; ‘performing on the iconic Shark Stage at the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics as one of the few selected artists by Emerging Icons & The Roundhouse, the mud of The Secret Garden Party & Hop Farm where I got to christen my red wellies at my very first festivals! And having my original track ‘Above The Water’ being selected as one of the songs to make the official 2012 accredited Olympic album ‘Album in the Park’ with Emerging Icons.’ Manoto TV has also featured Raphaella in a primetime documentary 'One day with Raphaella' introducing her to the Persian Diaspora and Middle East across the world. Raphaella has also played at The Roundhouse (Camden) for the Music Week Awards, The Sundance Film Festival, The UEFA Champions League Private Party & Roundhouse Access All Areas, and as a Roundhouse Emerging Artist has also been selected to take part in the 30:30 EMI Roundhouse project (2010) and the ‘Unconvention: Album in a Day’ project where Raphaella was selected alongside Viv Albertine and Charli XCX to record her beautiful arrangement of the Clash’s iconic ‘I’m not Down’ live. When performing either acoustically, sitting alone behind the piano or fronting her live band Raphaella's voice is her secret weapon.... it’s beautiful, captivating and unique and consistently cuts through the noise of everyday life to speak straight to the heart. Raphaella is also an Ambassador for the International charity Global Angels & the youth led charity Kids Count UK who both work to alleviate suffering, poverty & issues facing children & young people around the world. • I’ve seen Raphaella perform, and although it was early days she was really good. She has a lovely voice and is talented songwriter. “Idiot” is probably my favourite song of hers melodically, but I’m not sold on the lyric “idiot”… I think it gives the song a ceiling.

  • Raphaella's voice is a wonderful thing. Emotive with a great tone and phrasing. She seems also to have a natural knack for a pretty melody, although with co-writes it's hard to know who exactly does what. Her hooks are good - they creep up on you and stay put. For me "Idiot", whilst I like lots about it, is a little safe sounding and she's still keen on that mid tempo and smooth rhythm that I think may need more variation over an album or gig length. Still, I'm being picky because Raphaella has huge Star potential and is so much better than lots of what I hear. She looks good, has a winning personality and voices as good as this just don't come around very often - at all. Buy the EP! - go to some gigs and brag how you were there when she was self financing her own records.

  • The track starts at an orchestral pace, with a relaxing blend of instruments and vocals reminding you of some of the pop songs you hear in the charts - without losing any artistic integrity. But with music today being saturated with great female vocalists, can Raphaella break through? Only time will tell.

  • This is a song sung with passion. The strong vocal performance sits nicely with the balance of the piano and the dynamics of the track really emphasizes emotion.

  • A great artist to review as there is real talent. The vocal is true and shows many of the current crop of female artists that you don't have to hide behind the production. The vocal is so good that the sound levels are set correctly to show off her voice. The music is simple and marries the grace of the lyrics with the passion of the singing. The song itself is a very well crafted, which is super radio friendly. If she can continue to write songs like this, Raphaella can go far. Do we actually have somebody who can potentially take on Adele? I think so.

  • Above The Water is a deep meaningful song that works perfectly as a piano, vocal combination. Raphaella has a stunning soulful voice, fans of Alicia Keys and Adele should check out Raphaella’s music.

  • God! She's got a beautiful voice. I love the instrumentation and the fact that she's capable of making a decent sized hooky chorus based upon the same chord progression. If I have to comment, I thought thatthere was too much reverb on the vocals. I thought it was too washy. Sometimes it's okay when you can't sing well, but Raphaella's got a beautiful voice. She doesn't need as much reverb. Incredbile! Raphaella's not signed?!?!

  • The song sounds like an Emeli Sandé ballad, a sweet, R'n'B vocal, perhaps a bit more younger sounding. Possibly if Tulisa was to belt one out this is what I can imagine it sounding like... not a bad thing! I mean, yes, she is a bit of a muppet but you can't deny the girl has a set of pipes on her!

  • “ RAPHAELLA is doing the right thing by putting her songs up on youtube for people to discover, she has a lovely voice and the song is great. She should definitely carry on doing what she’s doing – writing great songs and putting them up and letting people discover her.”

  • Nothing hurts Like You - It's all a wee bit Ke$ha, but when did sounding like a multi-million selling artist ever hurt anyone?

  • Nothing Hurts Like You - Raphaella immediately puts me in a good mood because she’s not being earnest with an acoustic guitar. This is an impressive demo. The girl can sing and you can feel the confidence in her performance. I like the modern pop electronic production as well, although I’m not entirely sure it’s sympathetic to her. It’s a good pop song too – with a half decent hook. Pop star in the making ? Could be. So far - very good to these ears – more hits please !

  • There are a lot of talented artists out there, but Raphaella really has something special that catches your attention!!! I'm addicted :D

  • I love this song as it's fusion of western and middle eastern influences and the lyrics are quite meaningful - everyone needs security and foundation to their lives and doesn't want to fall down into uncertainty. Great song!

  • the words to this song and the time at which I heard them (in the Olympic Park 2012) meant so much to me in that I had a relationship that I had finished and two hearts were broken at the time and I realised that the price we paid was love. Sad. x
