Introduction

Fjokra is a multi-instrumentalist from Dublin. Drawing influences from an eclectic mix of genres, he founded the project in 2010 while living in Manchester.

Bio

Now based in London, over the past 18 months Fjokra has been gigging regularly with his eponymous band, building up a passionate fanbase. His music soon drew the attention of Kaiser Chiefs, who curated an album called 'Emerging Icons' which was released by Unsigned Band Review via Universal Music in May 2012. The album featured the 7 and a half mini epic 'Slyrex', selected by Kaiser Chiefs for its surprising changes that leave you wanting to "...find out what happens next". After spending the majority of the summer rehearsing a new and improved set, the band are excited at the prospect of performing with two new members who have cemented the line-up and are more than ready to rise to the challenge of Fjokra's often complex and rich compositions. Offstage and behind closed doors, Fjokra is constantly writing and recording new material, with an EP release to follow early 2013. Fjokra live are: Sam White - Drums Freddie Draper - Bass, Vocals Jajo - Guitar, Vocals S.E.B - Electronics, Percussion, Guitar, Vocals Fjokra - Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards

  • The incomparable Fjokra come again with their one time set opener "Psycho For The Sake Of It". Intelligence at Motorhead speed. Except for the dub bit. See that's the thing with Fjokra - they ALWAYS keep you guessing. More ideas per second than you'll hear anywhere else. Strange notes that scatter your synapses and create a whole new world of music. Go Get It.

  • Fun little song. Sounds like the recording needs to be mastered properly. Reminded me of a band called 'Twelve Stone Toddler'. I feel like this song call a little bit over complicated. It really is a fusion of many different styles. Unique yes. Commercial. No. Good fun live act I am sure.

  • A psychophrenic trippy aural adventure with 'jazz hands'! Intelligent. Creative. Blending musical styles in a unique way....the band are not just gifted they have mastered their craft. Intrigued to see a live performance!

  • Review of their 2nd May performance at the Bull & Gate for the launch of the Emerging Icons album - A lot of energy from a captivating frontman who knew how to get the crowd going. There were a lot of surprises in the set as they changed pace and style with ease.

  • Review of their 2nd May performance at the Bull & Gate for the launch of the Emerging Icons album: Short sets all night tonight and this felt even more so for Fjokra. That’s not only because their songs are epic multi layered journeys but also because, on this evidence, they are all REALLY good and you just ache to hear more. You can tell that Fjokra revel in being something new – they want to keep you guessing - they want to make you think or maybe they want to overload you with input that all you can do is FEEL. They seamlessly blend so many different styles you need to see them to believe it. It’s all done with technique, style and no little attitude. Traditional marketers will want to restrict them and put them in a convenient box, but I hope (and think) they will stick to their uncompromising principles. Highly recommended.

  • Slyrex - Like watching a warlord roll into town, burning huts down as he goes, then gasping as he tries to romance the villagers with some New Power Generation and fruit dipped in chocolate. Dr Jekyll and Mister Sexy.

  • Review of their 2nd May performance at the Bull & Gate for the launch of the Emerging Icons album: A mentally amazing band. Fjokra are very talented musicians who play well together. There were so many members on stage I lost count, and there was so much going on. They're a tight band and insane on stage.

  • Review of their 2nd May performance at the Bull & Gate for the launch of the Emerging Icons album: One of the craziest live sets i've seen in a long time. It's amazing the way they can mesh so many different genres into each song and make it work. I heard everything in there from rap metal to gypsy folk, from prog rock to big band - great stuff!

  • Beck did this album that sounded like Prince – and it sounds like that album in some places. If we’re making an Emerging Icons album, definitely put it on. It’s very interesting, and something that I think you’d listen to a few times and each time you’d hear something new, which is cool. The next song that they do, it can’t just be the same. It will have to be something else. So I’d like to hear some more of Fjokra.

  • Simon and I have just listened to Fjokra – all seven minutes. I’m confused but in a good way. I like the metal-type drumming at the beginning, then it goes into smooth laid-back groove. There’s a bit of Barry White in there I reckon – without the low vocals, but the musical-ness. If you were seeing that band live – you wouldn’t go to the bar in that song, because you’d just want to know what’s going to happen next. Even the first few minutes it suddenly changes - good changes. You’ll think ‘I want to find out what happens. I think it’s sex music for metallers. That is the genre – that’s a niche that’s not been filled. No pun intended...

  • Haha! Epic Intro - this band want to make an entrance ! Whoa - this lot must have swallowed entire record collections - which makes an enormous and refreshing change from usual. I'm getting Jellyfish, Zappa, Gabriel era Genesis, Muse or even Battles. OK this track is 7:22 and therefore goes against all the traditional A&R rules, which is hopefully what they wanted to do, but they pull it off magnificently. This is a band that are truly following their own curve and exude confidence in what they're saying AND how they say it. Please can I go to a gig ?

  • Slyrex – Fjokra: When this song comes on, you're instantly convinced it’s a rock song with its fast drum beat and heavy guitar riff, but then you are transported into this sensual verse with sexy synth and funky guitar muting. The lyrics defiantly compliment the instruments in the verse. The chorus is the climax of the song as it is full in texture and sounds breath-taking with the harmonies provided by the male and female vocalists. Although this may not appeal to a wide audience it makes great sex music.

  • What have I just listened to?! The closest thing you can get to an acid filled orgy in hell with an 80s Boy George. In a good way.

  • Slyrex It would seem that Fjokra's intention through "Slyrex" is really simply to surprise, bewilder and fascinate their listener. This is something undoubtedly achieved from the song's somewhat cheapened unnecessary metal-doom opening through to the chilled-out and laid-back mid-section which is solely constructed by vocals and percussive beats. The intermittent return of the death-metal breakdown, however, does spoil the vocal talent and intriguing beats that appears in between. Fortunately the song eventually reaches musical maturity with playfully soulful ballad style melodies which slowly descend into a sweet piano breakdown. The best way to describe this song, however, is simply a runaway train and possibly as a result a train wreck. There are many standout musical gems in this track but as they are interspersed between a lot of musical confusion it is hard to appreciate them. - Anishka Sharma

  • Slyrex One hell of a thunderous opening clears to a late 90s chill-out groove - a really interesting track. At points it's pure En Vogue, but with more pomp per-square-inch than you've any right to expect from a song like this.

  • Slyrex - A pompous opening (in all the right ways) turns into a chill-out filthstorm. It all gets a bit En Vogue by the end if we're honest, but there's nowt wrong with that.

  • Love this song!! These guys are amazing!!! Hope they have some more gigs coming up soon!!!

  • Artistically, Fjokra are and can be almost anything they want. It's the "oppositions" that are their charm and their Achilles heel - at least to the standard A&R pup. It takes a brave fan to sign up to the Fjokra doctrine; how can you pin so many colours to the mast ? Ooh - I'm into Thrash, Reggae, Rap, Electronica, Soul ... Of course that's the genius of Fjokra's music and it's easier to pull off recorded than live, especially at smaller venues. This is the fifth time I've seen Fjokra now and they make fine improvements each time. The danger with such oblique genre changes, even within the same song, is that it comes across as overly clever and soulless. There are times tonight where all the band relax and look like they're enjoying themselves. This makes a huge positive difference. Less often than this, it comes across as full of shouty angst and tension. With music this complex you don't need further possible alienation from your audience. The look tonight is better. The band are in different dress because it's a crazy Japanese Valentine's Ball. It helps. The make up and dainty oil paper wagasa subvert the headbanging and murderers' balaclava. The visual contradictions ape the musical ones. "Skrylex" is still the centrepiece tune and mighty it indeed is. It mostly hints at the power of the band at full pelt rather than stating it overtly and for me this song is the magical blueprint of a unique new mix. A sound where Fjokra achieve their own genre and the audience get it completely. Go and be brilliantly confused - this will be some ride.

  • Can't wait for this. :)
