Introduction

Danny Sherwood is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter on the London scene: “A man with a piano and a deep voice performing lyric-led, jazz-tinged folk-blues”. He has just completed his first solo EP, entitled When My Ship Comes In.

Bio

Danny grew up amongst the grey hills of Derbyshire. Although he has lived in London for almost a decade, his rural roots can still be seen in an apparent bleakness of outlook, the short pronunciation of his vowels and his oft-worn flat cap. Songwriting since childhood, Danny is driven by the need to better understand himself and those close to him (frequently those who are bed-close). He shares his stories and personal experiences through carefully-crafted, emotional lyrics. Borne by memorable melodies, these words explore complex and often contradictory emotional landscapes: affection and anger, tranquillity and turmoil, angst and apathy. In his words, “being a songwriter gives every experience a silver lining: a bad relationship can become a great song”. Danny’s voice is a deep baritone and his piano style eclectic, inspired by jazz, blues, gospel and classical. This creates an evocative mood that hints at Tom Waits. You can also hear Bob Dylan’s influence in his storytelling, Ben Folds in his dark humour, Regina Spektor in his simplicity and tenderness. Danny rolls together these elements with many others to create a warm, intimate sound that is uniquely his own. This is Danny Sherwood: music written from the heart and sung from the belly.

Q. How did you first get into playing music?

My Dad's a musician, so I started when I was really little. I was in a band from when I was about 11 years old.

Q. How long have you been performing?

I was probably 12 or 13 when I did my first gig. A long time!

Q. How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

Lyric-led, jazz-tinged folk-blues.

Q. What makes your music unique?

My songwriting has an eclectic range of influences, so each song brings something new. I have a bass/baritone voice and a self-taught piano style. The sounds ends up with an emotional mix of sadness and beauty and dark humour, wrapped up in unexpected ways.

Q. What inspires you to write songs?

People, relationships, lovers, life. Those things that are the hardest to deal with, or the greatest feelings. Things that we can all relate to in some way or another.

Q. What have been your best and worst gig experiences?

I played a show in New Cross last year. I was meant to be on at 8pm, I didn't get on until 1am. By which time the promoter had accepted his failure and gone home, leaving all the work to a disgruntled sound engineer. However, I really enjoyed playing, quite drunk, to the reggae and hip-hop crowds who remained. So it actually turned out pretty well!

Q. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?

Joni Mitchell's Blue. There is so much in there I can come back to it again and again. And have been doing for quite some time!

Q. What do you get up to when you’re not making music?

Promoting music! I love being out with friends, cooking, eating, drinking, reading.

Q. What are your goals at the moment?

Like many people on here I imagine, to scrape a living out of writing and playing.

Q. What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or gigs lined up?

My EP has just come out so I'm working on promoting that now. I'm putting together a video for a couple of the tracks. I've also started working with a cellist.

Q. What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?

I've only just found out about it, but it sounds a great idea!

Q. What is the name of the last track that you wrote and what is it about?

I wrote a track called "Responsibility" (although I think this is probably a working title), about taking responsibility for your own actions. It's sung from a man's perspective. He leaves his wife because she has cheated on him. He also cheats, both blaming their actions on the other. The listener follows the man around as he drinks and philanders, until he comes back to see his wife and blame her again. She snaps, and knocks him out! It's not the kind of song I usually write, but I like writing stories. And to was good to have a song with two reprehensible characters, as I generally aim to draw the listener into empathising with my characters.

Q. What was the music scene like where you grew up?

I grew up in a small town in Derbyshire, so there was very little. I was in a band and there was another band. That was the scene!
