Fjokra have created an industry buzz...
"Sex music for metallers!"
Headliners By Genre
"Epic intro - this band want to make an entrance! This lot must have swallowed entire record collections, which makes an enormous and refreshing change from usual. I'm getting Jellyfish, Zappa, Gabriel era Genesis, Muse or even Battles. OK this track is 7:22 and therefore goes against all the traditional A&R rules, which is hopefully what they wanted to do, but they pull it off magnificently. This is a band that are truly following their own curve and exude confidence in what they're saying AND how they say it. Please can I go to a gig?" - Simon Li, Universal Music - review for the track 'Slyrex'
Fjokra are a London based 6-piece headed by the immensely talented Fiachra Mac Oireachtai. The genre of their music is indefinable and their stage performances leave audiences amazed and dying to hear more. They have been described as "Queen on crack" and their influences range from Prince to Rachmaninoff. Their epic 7 minute long track 'Slyrex' is featured on the first Emerging Icons compilation album, curated by Kaiser Chiefs. In May 2012 they played at the official launch gig for the album at the Bull & Gate. Hear their songs, read their reviews and watch their videos HERE.
Read our interview with Fjokra below....
How did you first get into playing music?
Ever since I was 3 years old when I started abusing the piano in my house I've been pretty much hooked!
How long have you been performing?
Since I was about 8.
How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
Queen on crack.
What makes your music unique?
It's refusal to do what you were expecting it to do.
What inspires you to write songs?
Everything from an asteroid hurtling through infinite space to the weird bit of skin on my big toe.
What have been your best and worst gig experiences?
Any gig when the crowd doesn't have to be over 18 and are young and free enough to Get Amongst It is generally great. Any gig when the crowd is too old to hear or care about the music ain't that great.
If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life what would it be?
Beck - Midnite Vultures
What do you get up to when you’re not making music?
Hurtling through infinite space on an asteroid and playing with the weird bit of skin on my big toe.
What are your goals at the moment?
World - and then Universal - domination. Gotta break Tottenham first though...
What do you think of Unsigned Band Review?
Quite a lot. It has and is playing a very significant role in our exposure both in the music media world and the live circuit. We are best buddies.
